Julian Alvarez Returns to Atletico Madrid Squad Amid Transfer Speculation

Julian Alvarez’s turbulent week at Atletico Madrid has ended with a place back in Diego Simeone’s squad – and a seat on the bench – for the La Liga clash with Villarreal.

The Argentina forward, at the centre of a simmering transfer saga, is included in the matchday group after being left out of the midweek win over Malaga. Atletico start without a recognised No. 9, but Simeone has still turned back to Alvarez despite the noise surrounding his future.

Speaking before the game, Simeone was unequivocal about the 24-year-old’s status.

“Julian Alvarez will be in the squad tomorrow,” he said in his press conference. “For me, Julian is an extremely important player for us to achieve our objectives. As long as he’s with the team, I’m going to look after him.”

That protection has been badly needed.

Alvarez’s push to leave for Barcelona has angered sections of the Atletico support, who have not been shy in showing it. On Friday, signs appeared around the club’s Majadahonda training base reading “JULIAN FUERA” – “JULIAN OUT” – with his No. 19 struck through. The message was as blunt as it gets.

Even so, Alvarez trained with the squad ahead of the Villarreal fixture, a visible sign that, at least for now, player and club are still tied together. His inclusion suggests some kind of temporary truce, despite his frustration at being denied a move to Camp Nou.

Arsenal have hovered in the background of the story. The ex-Manchester City striker is understood to have held contact with Mikel Arteta over a possible switch to the Emirates, but the pull of Barcelona has been stronger in his own mind. Atletico, though, have held firm.

Simeone has stood in front of his player as the criticism has grown.

“I respect our fans,” he said. “I always have, but I don’t agree with insults or abuse. Every word is being scrutinised by people waiting to create conflict and uncertainty.

“There is no uncertainty. Miguel was very clear. He is our player and we need him.”

Alvarez’s initial absence from the Malaga game was officially put down to fitness rather than fury. Simeone pointed to the forward’s extended break after the World Cup and insisted he was not yet ready.

“We don’t believe Julián Alvarez is in the right condition to play or take part for tomorrow’s game,” he said before that match. “Hopefully, over these next four days, he’ll make further progress and we’ll be closer to where we want him to be.”

Four days on, Alvarez is back in the squad and back under the spotlight.

Behind the scenes, Atletico are still planning aggressively. Even while they dig in over Alvarez, the club have been heavily linked with a move for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, who is reported to have “said yes” to a transfer.

So Simeone walks a tightrope: defending a forward who wants out, leaning on him in the short term, and watching the club chase another No. 9. How long that balance holds may shape Atletico’s season.
