João Cancelo Joins Barcelona Permanently Until 2029
João Cancelo is back in Barcelona. This time, he’s here to stay.
The club have confirmed that the Portuguese full-back has signed a permanent deal until June 30, 2029, joining as a free agent after reaching an agreement to terminate his contract with Al-Hilal of the Saudi Pro League.
“Agreement reached between João Cancelo and FC Barcelona for the Portuguese player to join. The fullback arrives as a free agent and signs a contract up to 30 June 2029,” read Barça’s official statement.
For Cancelo, this isn’t a new chapter so much as the continuation of a story he refused to let end. After two successful loan spells, he pushed to make the Camp Nou — and now the Olympic Stadium in the short term — his long-term home.
He made that clear when he spoke about the move, revealing the personal cost behind it.
“I’m very happy, I’m very pleased to be here, I’m where I want to be. I trained separately for a week. I told Deco that either I came here or I’d spend a year there without playing, still getting paid,” he said.
The choice was stark. The decision was not.
“I gave up part of my salary, but it was either sign for Barça or nothing. It’s a very special club, I’m here to help and I hope to win many titles. We’re building a great team.”
Cancelo, now 32, is expected to slot straight into Hansi Flick’s starting XI, with the German coach planning to use him primarily at left-back. Alejandro Balde, returning from injury and still one of the brightest prospects in the squad, will be tasked with pushing the veteran every week.
A player who once arrived as a short-term fix now returns as a cornerstone. Barcelona have their man, again — only this time, the clock on his deal runs all the way to 2029.
