Inter Milan Targets Federico Chiesa After Signing Curtis Jones

Inter Milan have already taken one Liverpool midfielder and are lining up a second Anfield raid.

Curtis Jones’ move to San Siro was wrapped up on Friday, the 25-year-old leaving Liverpool in a deal that could rise to £30 million. It may not be a one-off. Inter, buoyed by that agreement, are now exploring a move for Federico Chiesa.

From title winner to squad expendable

Chiesa, 28, joined Liverpool from Juventus in 2024 for a fee of around £12.5m and arrived with the pedigree of a European champion and a big-club winger in his prime. He also arrived on a sizeable wage, with reports placing his weekly salary at about £150,000.

The medals are there. He can already call himself a Premier League title winner. The role, though, has never matched the reputation.

Used sparingly at Anfield, Chiesa has struggled to carve out a starting place and has not convinced Andoni Iraola during preseason. The new Liverpool boss appears ready to move him on if the club’s valuation is met, leaving the Italian’s future hanging in the balance before a ball has been kicked in the new campaign.

Inter’s domino plan: Henrique out, Chiesa in?

The opportunity for Inter is clear.

The Nerazzurri are preparing to sell Brazilian forward Luis Henrique to Roma for a fee of around €25m, a move that would hand Cristian Chivu room to bring in a replacement wide attacker.

According to Inter-focused reporter Fabio Bergomi, that replacement could well be Chiesa. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Bergomi suggested the Italy international is firmly on Inter’s shortlist.

“Chiesa could be the one who goes in place of Luis Henrique, if Luis Henrique accepts Roma, as seems to be the case,” he said, adding that he would “narrow it down to Chiesa” as a plausible signing once the Henrique deal is done.

The plan is straightforward: cash in on Henrique, reinvest in Chiesa, and hand Chivu an experienced, versatile winger who knows Serie A inside out.

Injuries, doubts and a stalled Liverpool spell

Chiesa’s Liverpool story has never really caught fire.

Last season, under Arne Slot, he managed only two Premier League starts and failed to convince in either. The promise of a fresh beginning under a new manager has not materialised into minutes or momentum.

He has also been missing from training in the build-up to Liverpool’s season opener against Newcastle. That absence, though, is understood to be down to another injury rather than any direct consequence of ongoing transfer talks.

So the pattern continues: stop-start fitness, limited chances, and a player of obvious talent stuck on the fringes.

A second San Siro switch?

With Jones already on board, Inter know Liverpool are open for business. The relationship between the clubs has been tested and used this week; another negotiation would not be hard to start.

For Chiesa, a return to Italy and a prominent role in Chivu’s attacking rotation could offer the reset his career badly needs. For Inter, landing a Euro 2020 winner as part of a summer reshuffle would send a message about their depth and ambition.

Now the question is simple: having taken Jones, will Inter push to complete the double and bring Chiesa back to Serie A before the window slams shut?
