Hansi Flick's Bold Start at Barcelona

Hansi Flick has wasted no time putting his stamp on Barcelona.

For the opening game of the season against Elche CF, the German coach has gone bold, leaving out Alejandro Balde, Marc Casado and Hector Fort from the squad entirely and then doubling down with a daring starting XI.

Flick tears up the script

The headline call comes at left-back, where youngster Xavi Espart has been handed a start. His inclusion pushes new signing Joao Cancelo to the bench, a decision that underlines just how much Flick is prepared to trust youth on day one.

On the opposite flank, Eric Garcia lines up at right-back, with Andreas Christensen and Gerard Martin forming the central defensive partnership. It is a back four that mixes experience, experimentation and a clear message: reputations alone will not guarantee minutes.

Midfield built to attack

In midfield, Marc Bernal is given a significant responsibility from the first whistle. He will anchor the centre of the pitch, tasked with dictating the tempo and offering balance next to two far more aggressive runners: Gavi and Fermin Lopez.

That trio hints at a high-energy, front-foot approach. Bernal to steady, Gavi and Fermin to break lines and flood forward.

Adeyemi through the middle

Up front, Flick has gone with another new face in a key role. Karim Adeyemi starts as a false nine, flanked by Raphinha and Lamine Yamal. Adeyemi’s movement between the lines should drag defenders out of position, opening lanes for the Brazilian’s direct threat and Yamal’s creativity from the right.

It is an attacking unit built for pace, fluidity and constant rotation rather than a traditional target man.

Firepower on the bench

If the starting XI is adventurous, the bench is stacked with options that could change the game’s tone in an instant.

Anthony Gordon, another of the summer arrivals, is available to make his debut in the second half, offering fresh legs and aggression in wide areas. Cancelo, Pedri and Jules Kounde also wait in reserve, giving Flick the flexibility to reshape both defence and midfield as the match unfolds.

All eyes will also be on whether Hamza Abdelkarim gets a chance. The forward has generated plenty of buzz and offers a more orthodox presence in the number nine role should Flick want to switch away from the false-nine system later on.

One match in, and it is already clear: under Hansi Flick, Barcelona’s team sheet will be anything but predictable.
