Hansi Flick's Tough Love for Alejandro Balde at Barcelona

Hansi Flick has wasted no time laying down clear lines at Barcelona – and Alejandro Balde has felt it on day one.

As Barça began the defence of their La Liga crown away to Elche at the Estadio Martínez Valero, the new head coach named a powerful first matchday squad. New signings Karim Adeyemi, Anthony Gordon and João Cancelo all made the cut, underlining the sense of a fresh start under the German.

Balde, though, was nowhere to be seen. Not in the XI. Not even on the bench.

The left-back’s absence did not come out of the blue. His name has dominated the Barcelona news cycle in recent days, with speculation growing over a possible Camp Nou exit for the Spanish international. That noise only grew louder when the squad list dropped without him.

Flick addressed the decision head-on before kick-off, offering a blunt explanation rather than hiding behind vague “technical reasons”.

"I spoke with Alejandro Balde today and said to him that I think you're not here 109%, so it's best that you stay at home and clear your mind. We will talk again tomorrow," the coach told reporters.

No dressing it up. No ambiguity. If you are not fully switched on, you do not travel.

For Balde, a player once fast-tracked into the first team and hailed as a cornerstone of Barça’s future, the message could hardly be clearer. For the rest of the dressing room, it sets an early standard: reputation counts for less than readiness under Flick.

The conversation between coach and defender will resume on Monday. What comes out of that meeting may say plenty about where Balde fits – or doesn’t – in this new Barcelona era.
