Martinelli has been frozen out of recent matchday squads, cut from the group at the very moment Arsenal are celebrating their first league crown since 2004. Inside the club, the decision is being read as a clear message: sentiment will not stand in the way of the next phase of this project.

That message has not landed smoothly in the dressing room. According to ESPN, Arteta’s hard-line stance has created “some discomfort” among the players, with several team‑mates strongly sympathetic to Martinelli’s situation. This is not a fringe player being moved on quietly; this is a core figure being cast aside.

The flashpoint came at Wembley.

When Arsenal lifted the Community Shield after beating Manchester City, Martinelli was nowhere near the squad and did not receive a winners’ medal. Globo Esporte reports that the forward was “greatly disappointed” by the omission, and the decision is understood to have upset senior players who felt the snub was unnecessarily brutal.

Left flank reset

The clues were there earlier in the summer.

Arsenal pushed through a £34 million deal for highly rated attacker Christos Tzolis, a move that immediately crowded Martinelli’s territory on the left. For many, that contribution earned him credit. For Arteta, it appears it did not earn him a future.

When Martinelli was left out of the squad for the Premier League opener against Coventry City, the situation stopped being a rumour and became a reality. This was not rotation. It was a statement.

Saudi move in sight

Interest arrived from Europe. Galatasaray made an approach, but the move failed to spark Martinelli’s enthusiasm. The turning point came from the Gulf.

Globo Esporte reports that the winger has now given the green light to a lucrative switch to Al Hilal, having initially hesitated over a move to Saudi Arabia. Money, playing time and a clean break from a club that has clearly moved on: the package has finally convinced him.

The only thing left is for the clubs to agree a fee.

Arsenal are pushing for a package in the region of £60 million for a player who has given them five years, nearly 300 games and a place in their modern history. ESPN, though, suggests the final figure is likely to land closer to £40 million.

If that is where it ends, Arsenal will bank a sizeable sum and a free lane for their revamped left flank. Martinelli, still in his early prime, will swap the Emirates for Riyadh and the Premier League spotlight for Saudi Arabia’s new football theatre.

The question that lingers is not whether this is ruthless – it clearly is – but whether, in a season that demands evolution from champions, Arsenal will be proved right to cut so deep into the heart of their own story.
