Cody Gakpo Transfer Saga: Manchester City Joins the Chase

Manchester City have stepped directly into the chase for Cody Gakpo, turning an already complicated late-window saga into a full Premier League tug of war.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano revealed that City have held a face-to-face meeting with the Liverpool forward’s representatives, opening talks over potential contract figures as they explore a move before the window closes.

City’s intervention arrives with Tottenham already on the scene.

Spurs’ quiet agreement – and City’s late move

According to Romano, Tottenham have had a verbal agreement in place with Gakpo over personal terms since July. The framework of a contract is understood to be ready on the player’s side, with Spurs prepared financially if a deal can be struck with Liverpool.

Crucially, that agreement does not mean Gakpo is pushing to leave Anfield. Romano stressed that the Dutchman is happy at Liverpool. From the player’s side, the door is not slammed shut, but it is not being forced open either.

Spurs, though, know what they would be paying and how the deal would look. That part is set.

Now City have arrived.

Romano says the champions have “made direct contact” and already sat down with Gakpo’s camp, beginning to discuss the numbers involved in a potential contract. City are ready to go head‑to‑head with Tottenham if Liverpool show any willingness to negotiate.

The race is on. But Liverpool hold the only key that matters.

Liverpool’s stance: no exit without two arrivals

Romano was clear on one decisive point: Liverpool will not approve Gakpo’s departure in the final days of the window unless they secure two wingers.

That is the condition. No replacements, no sale.

The club’s top attacking target is Bradley Barcola, with Romano describing that deal as “still fully on”. Liverpool are working to bring the highly rated winger in, and that pursuit sits at the top of their attacking agenda.

Alongside Barcola, Liverpool are also pushing on another front. Romano revealed that the Reds have held talks over two offers for Iyenoma Mudryk and remain in discussions with his agent. Other alternatives are on the table as well, as Liverpool try to build a safety net of options before making any decision on Gakpo.

So the equation is simple, but ruthless: only if Liverpool land Barcola and another winger will they even consider giving the green light.

Until then, City and Spurs can plan, pitch and negotiate all they like. The decisive move still belongs to Liverpool – and to the clock.
