Chelsea Reject Leeds' Loan Bid for Mykhailo Mudryk

Chelsea have turned down an opening season-long loan offer from Leeds United for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, but the door is very much still open.

The proposal, which did not include any option to buy, came in well below Chelsea’s expectations on terms and contribution, prompting an immediate rejection. Negotiations are ongoing, with all sides aware that Mudryk is keen on a move to Elland Road as he looks for a fresh start and regular minutes.

The 25-year-old has already agreed in principle to spend the season away from Stamford Bridge to rebuild his match fitness and sharpness. He spent 20 months out of the game after testing positive for the banned substance meldonium, a suspension that only ended in July.

Since then, Mudryk has been eased back into action on Chelsea’s pre-season tour under new head coach Xabi Alonso, making several appearances from the bench as he tries to piece his career back together.

Premier League football remains his priority. Recent talks have made clear that Mudryk would prefer to stay in England despite interest from Strasbourg — Chelsea’s sister club under the BlueCo ownership group — and several Serie A sides.

Leeds have surged to the front of the queue because they are prepared to take him on a straight loan without any purchase option. That stance suits Chelsea, who want to retain full control of Mudryk’s long-term future while shifting his salary for the season.

The move would add to a busy summer at Elland Road. The Whites have already brought in attacker Harry Wilson from Fulham, centre-back Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo, goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City and defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach. Earlier interest in Chelsea striker Liam Delap has since cooled.

Brentford had also been in the frame for Mudryk. The Bees pushed for a deal that included an option to buy, something Chelsea flatly rejected. Their interest is not new: Brentford tried to sign the winger several months before Chelsea landed him from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 for an initial £61m and they remain alert to any change in stance.

Coventry City have registered their interest as well, while a switch to Strasbourg is still being weighed up. Chelsea are exploring the idea of sending other players to the French club too, including midfielder Dario Essugo, as they look to shape a wider loan strategy.

For now, Mudryk staying at Stamford Bridge is viewed as unlikely, even if it cannot be completely ruled out. With pre-season ticking by and multiple clubs circling, the next offer on the table may decide whether his reset comes amid the intensity of Elland Road or somewhere very different.
