Chelsea Intensifies Pursuit of Atalanta Star Honest Ahanor

Chelsea have stepped up their interest in Atalanta’s rising star Honest Ahanor, opening preliminary talks with both the Serie A club and the defender’s entourage, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The London club have been tracking the Italy international and have now made their first formal move, sounding out Atalanta and the player’s camp over a potential deal. It is an ambitious target. Atalanta have already shown this summer they are in no mood to be pushed around.

Earlier in the window, Brighton saw a €34m offer for Ahanor turned down, and sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli made it clear in July that the club do not intend to sell any of their best or most promising talents. Ahanor is firmly in that bracket.

The 18-year-old joined Atalanta from Genoa in 2025 in a €16m transfer, a significant fee for a teenager and an early sign of how highly he was rated inside Italy. Since then, his development has accelerated.

Comfortable as a left wing-back or on the left side of a back three, Ahanor offers the kind of tactical flexibility that appeals to top clubs shopping for modern defenders. He has already racked up 28 Serie A appearances and, in June, made his senior Italy debut under caretaker coach Silvio Baldini, underlining his rapid rise.

Giuntoli is only just into his first season in Bergamo, where he has been reunited with new coach Maurizio Sarri, the pair having previously worked together at Napoli. Their arrival has reinforced Atalanta’s ambition to compete while holding on to their core assets, a stance that makes Chelsea’s pursuit even more complicated.

There is, however, an existing line of communication between the clubs. Chelsea and Atalanta have already done business this summer, with Marco Palestra leaving the Gewiss Stadium for Stamford Bridge in a €60m move. That deal showed Atalanta will sell at the right price — but only on their terms.

Whether Chelsea are prepared to test those terms again for an 18-year-old defender will define the next chapter of this transfer story.
