Chelsea Considering Late Move for Marcus Rashford

Chelsea are weighing up a late swoop for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford in what would be one of the most eye-catching moves of the window, according to reports.

It would cap a wild summer at Stamford Bridge. The club have already blasted through the £300m barrier on signings, headlined by Morgan Rogers becoming the most expensive British player in history. Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra and Valentin Barco have all arrived, while Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson have been brought in to add experience to Xabi Alonso’s new-look squad.

The early signs on the pitch were chaotic and compelling. Chelsea opened their Premier League campaign with a breathless 3-2 win over west London neighbours Fulham on Monday night, a result that underlined both their attacking threat and their defensive teething problems.

Outgoings

Now the spotlight has swung to outgoings. Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap are both expected to be sold, with the hierarchy also prepared to listen to offers for Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto. Enzo Fernandez, repeatedly linked with Manchester City, will only be allowed to leave if a bid of at least £120m lands on the table.

Even as they try to trim the squad and raise funds, Chelsea have left the door open for one more attacking signing before the window shuts next week. That is where Rashford comes in.

According to The Independent, Chelsea are actively considering a late move for the England international. Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona, where he pushed for a permanent switch to Camp Nou, only to be sent back to Old Trafford at the end of the campaign.

At that point, United were widely thought to be ready to cash in. Then Michael Carrick’s stance appeared to harden. Speaking to ITV1 during pre-season, the United manager sounded like a man planning with Rashford in mind.

“He’s our player, you know, and he’s come back great. He’s just like any other player,” Carrick said. “I’ve known Marcus a long time and, you know, he gives us something a little bit different. And he’s been in great spirits since he’s been back.

“He’s been back two or three days training and it’s just pretty normal, to be honest. And we’re looking forward to the start of the season.”

Rashford featured from the bench in United’s Premier League opener at Hull City on Saturday, introduced at half-time as Carrick’s side slumped to a shock 2-0 defeat. It was a subdued start to a season that could define the next phase of his career.

Now 28 and already past 400 appearances for his boyhood club, Rashford sits at a crossroads. Stay and fight for a place at United under a manager who says he trusts him? Or jump to a Chelsea project that is being rebuilt at speed?

One former Blue is in no doubt what he would like to see.

Andy Townsend believes Rashford would be a clear upgrade for Chelsea, especially after Alejandro Garnacho’s loan move to Aston Villa.

“I think Marcus Rashford improves Chelsea’s squad, he is an improvement on Alejandro Garnacho, that’s for sure,” Townsend told CasinoHawks.

He also highlighted the potential value in the deal. “The number we were talking about was £35m. I’m very surprised that no one has come to get him for that money, even if he’s 28.”

For Townsend, the timing of any move is crucial. Wide forwards are expected to deliver relentlessly now, and careers at the top rarely stretch deep into the thirties.

“Wide strikers are asked to produce a lot of output nowadays, and there aren’t many operating in the top flight at thirty-two or thirty-three. So these next couple of years for Marcus are big. It has to be the right move.”

The stumbling block is obvious: wages. Rashford is on a huge salary at United.

“He’s on massive wages, which is an issue for any club, but you’d think he could get that to a level everyone finds acceptable. A club like Chelsea might suit him,” Townsend added. “I could see that. I like Pedro Neto, but he sometimes flatters to deceive. Garnacho is far too inconsistent, like Jadon Sancho, those sorts of players are difficult to accommodate.

“Rashford showed at Barcelona that he can play at a big club, he understands that mentality.”

From a pure market perspective, Townsend can barely believe the reported fee.

“At £35m, I’d be surprised if a deal doesn’t get done, depending on his salary demands. If he wants to stick on £300,000-a-week, then he’s going to have a problem.

“But there’s no point in going back to Manchester United and not playing at his age. That doesn’t send a great image to potential suitors if he’s happy to just sit on the bench.

“Marcus and his team should be working around the clock to find the right environment for him at the right level, wage-wise. You want to play.

“At nearly 29, he’s in his peak, and he needs to be out there more often than not.”

Chelsea have already ripped up one script this summer. If they now decide to test United’s resolve over Rashford, the final week of the window could turn into something far more dramatic than a routine clear-out in west London.
