The 23-year-old right-back has joined St. Mirren on loan for the season, a move that, in reality, signals the end of his time at Anfield. His contract runs until the summer of 2027, but nobody inside or outside the club is talking as if there’s a route back.

Could that change? Only if Ramsay tears up the Scottish Premiership over the next few months and forces Liverpool into a January rethink. They are hardly overflowing with convincing long-term options at right-back. Even so, it would take something extraordinary. Right now, this feels like a farewell disguised as a loan.

It is a far cry from the noise that greeted his arrival.

Ramsay was 18, with just 28 first-team games behind him, but he carried the tag of one of Scotland’s brightest prospects. The fee raised eyebrows, the potential raised expectations. Serious injuries, including spinal issues he was already managing when he arrived, cut into his progress almost immediately. Surgery followed. Momentum vanished. By the time he was fit enough to play consistently, he was no longer close to Jürgen Klopp’s plans.
