Calvin Ramsay Ready to Rebuild at St Mirren After Liverpool Loan

Calvin Ramsay says he is ready to “rebuild myself” at St Mirren after sealing a season-long loan move from Liverpool – and this time he knows exactly what he’s walking into.

The 23-year-old arrives in Paisley with a Scotland cap, a £4.1m price tag from his 2020 move from Aberdeen to Anfield, and the frustration of a stalled career. Four first-team appearances for Liverpool in four years tell their own story. So do the loan spells: Preston, Bolton, Wigan, Kilmarnock. Twenty-six games scattered across four clubs, never quite the run he needed.

Now he wants something different. Rhythm. Responsibility. A platform.

“I know the league and I wanted to come back up here and try and show what I can do and rebuild myself again,” Ramsay said, outlining his thinking with a blunt honesty that fits the scale of the challenge.

“I feel like it's a good place to come. I want to try and perform, work as hard as I can and see where that takes me.”

This isn’t a leap into the unknown. Ramsay has already felt the pace and physical edge of the Scottish Premiership, and he believes the current St Mirren side is tailored to his strengths.

“It's probably a different St Mirren compared to the last few years. That'll suit me,” he explained. “I'm comfortable on the ball, I'm composed, I like to get on it and try and create things and make things happen.”

St Mirren manager Craig McLeish is banking on exactly that. For him, this is a deal that works both ways: a reset for a young defender whose potential once persuaded Liverpool to invest heavily, and a major addition to a squad pushing to evolve again.

McLeish did not hide his admiration.

He described Ramsay as an “exceptional” full-back and believes the Scotland international will bring a “different dynamic” to his options on the right side.

“It's a really important year for Calvin where he needs to find regular football to help kick on his career and we're happy to give him that platform because we get an exceptional young player to add to our group,” the manager said.

One cap for Scotland, earned in 2022, still sits as a marker of what Ramsay can be. St Mirren now offer him the chance to turn that reminder into a foundation – not a memory.
