Barcelona’s Second Bid for Rodri Rejected as Manchester City Hold Firm
Barcelona have faced another obstacle in their efforts to sign midfielder Rodri from Manchester City. The Premier League club has turned down a second bid, standing firm on their valuation despite the Spanish international's wish to join the Catalan giants.
Second Bid Falls Short
The Blaugrana increased their offer to about €60 million, attempting to close the gap after an initial proposal of €45 million plus €15 million in add-ons was dismissed by City. Yet, the Etihad side remains firm, seeking around £70 million (€81 million) plus additional performance bonuses. Although Rodri is entering the final year of his contract, City refuses to reduce their asking price.
Flick’s Influence Strengthens Rodri’s Intentions
Barcelona's hopes rest partly on the player’s enthusiasm for the move. The transfer chase intensified after a phone call from manager Hansi Flick, who personally outlined his plans to Rodri. This direct contact seems to have convinced the midfielder, who reportedly gave his full approval to the switch, despite earlier concerns about interest from Real Madrid.
Rodri’s agent, Pablo Barquero, told Spanish radio El Larguero: “Out of respect for Madrid, as they have been class, Rodri informed them that his decision is to join Barca.”
Challenges in Finding a Replacement
City’s hard stance may relate to the difficulty of replacing a key midfield figure. Coach Enzo Maresca is targeting Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea as Rodri's successor. However, acquiring Fernandez might prove costlier than Barcelona's bid, with Chelsea demanding around £120 million for the 2022 World Cup winner, whose contract runs until 2032.
What Comes Next?
Barcelona’s pursuit shows no signs of stopping. They see a new midfield leader as essential, especially with ongoing fitness issues surrounding Frenkie de Jong, who might need surgery. As the transfer window narrows, the pressure is now on Barcelona to meet City's demands or risk losing their main target. Rodri’s desire to play at the Spotify Camp Nou is a strong factor, but without a substantial increase in funds, the deal looks uncertain.
