Barcelona Denies Interest in Goncalo Inacio for Defense

Barcelona’s search for defensive reinforcements has taken a clear turn – and it does not lead to Lisbon.

Ronald Araujo’s loan move to Liverpool opened a sizeable hole at the heart of Barça’s back line. The captain’s departure, after two difficult seasons in Catalonia, felt like a reset button for both player and club. He gets a fresh start on Merseyside. Barcelona are left to rebuild a defence that has lost its most imposing figure.

Inside the club, there is faith in La Masia product Alvaro Cortes to step up. But nobody at Barça is pretending that internal solutions alone will be enough if the season bites hard. The recruitment department has been scanning the market, ready to pounce if the right profile appears.

For a few days, one name dominated the rumour mill: Goncalo Inacio.

Inacio links shut down

The Sporting CP centre-back had been heavily mentioned as a possible target, his left foot and composure on the ball fitting the classic Barça checklist. The noise grew loud enough that the club felt compelled to respond.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona have flatly denied any negotiations for the 24-year-old. No talks, no proposal, no active operation. Romano went as far as to describe the current level of contact as “zero”.

That stance matters. Barcelona are openly considering another centre-back before the window shuts, yet they are drawing a firm line through Inacio’s name. For now, he is not on the table.

Flick’s veto shapes the market

Romano also linked the situation directly to Hansi Flick’s preferences. The scenario mirrors the earlier speculation around Cristian Romero. Barcelona did not advance for the Argentine because Flick did not back the move. The same internal verdict applies to Inacio.

The coach and the sporting leadership are aligned: they are not convinced he is the right fit at this moment. Inacio has built a strong reputation in Portugal and established himself as a dependable central defender in Lisbon, but Barça’s staff clearly see a gap between excelling in the Primeira Liga and anchoring the defence at Camp Nou.

That gap, for now, is too wide for them to gamble on.

Market still wide open

Ruling out Inacio does not mean Barcelona are closing the door on defensive business. Far from it. With roughly a week left before deadline day, the club remain alert, tracking opportunities that might appear late in the window.

The situation around Alejandro Balde only heightens that urgency. The left-back is another player who could leave before the market closes, and his exit would open up a second problem on the left side of defence.

That is shaping the profile Deco and his team are studying. Ideally, Barcelona want a left-footed central defender who can also operate at left-back – one signing, two roles, maximum flexibility for Flick.

The clock is ticking, the needs are clear, and Araujo’s shadow still hangs over the back line. Barcelona have important transfer calls to make in the coming days. The only certainty so far is that Goncalo Inacio will not be the one walking through the door.
