Barcelona Faces Decision on Alejandro Balde Amid United Interest

Barcelona’s summer overhaul is gathering pace, and another big name is edging towards the door.

With Ronald Araujo and Ferran Torres already gone and Joao Cancelo about to walk through the door, Alejandro Balde has suddenly moved from pillar of the project to possible sacrifice. Manchester United, sensing an opening, are pushing hardest to take advantage.

United move to the front for Balde

MARCA report that Jorge Mendes flew into Barcelona this week with a folder full of offers for Balde and Marc Casado. The super-agent first sat down with the club’s sporting director, then with the players themselves, spelling out the scenarios in front of them.

Casado’s departure has long felt inevitable. Balde’s, far less so.

That changed when the left-back was left out of the squad for the game against Elche. No injury, no rotation excuse that really stuck. Just a clean omission that rang alarm bells around the Camp Nou offices and beyond.

From there, the picture sharpened quickly. Balde now has three firm proposals on the table. Manchester United are described as the frontrunners, with two other clubs also pushing for the Spain international.

For all the noise, though, sources around the situation insist nothing will be signed off immediately. The expectation is that Balde’s future will not be settled for a few more days at least, as Barcelona weigh sporting needs against financial reality and the player considers his next step.

Cancelo’s arrival squeezes Balde

The key pressure point is clear: Joao Cancelo.

The Portuguese defender is on the verge of returning and is widely expected to become Hansi Flick’s first-choice left-back this season. That changes everything for Balde. Twelve months ago he looked like the long-term answer on that flank; now his route to regular minutes is suddenly clogged.

Being dropped for the Elche match only underlined the shift. For a young full-back who needs rhythm and responsibility, the message was stark. Staying is still possible, but the odds are shrinking.

If Balde does go, Barcelona will not be able to stand still. They would have to re-enter the market, either for a specialist left-back or a centre-back, a position they have been eyeing for some time.

A new central defender would free Gerard Martin to slide across to left-back when needed, giving Flick more tactical options and cover without committing to a like-for-like replacement.

So Barcelona stand at a familiar crossroads: back a homegrown talent and risk congestion in a key position, or cash in while his value is high and rebuild the defensive puzzle around Cancelo and a reshaped back line.
