Balde's Barcelona Absence Fuels Manchester United Left-Back Pursuit

Alejandro Balde’s Barcelona absence has thrown fresh fuel on Manchester United’s late-window search for a new left-back.

The Spain international was a conspicuous omission from Hansi Flick’s 21-man squad for Barcelona’s LaLiga opener at Elche on Sunday night, a decision that lands right in the middle of growing noise around United’s interest.

United circle as Balde sits out

Barcelona begin their title defence a week later than most, but Balde will not be involved. His exclusion arrives just as reports in Spain and England converge on the same theme: United have moved him to the top of their left-back shortlist with the window closing on September 1.

United are understood to have already made contact with Jorge Mendes over a possible deal, exploring what it would take to prise the 22-year-old out of Catalonia. Mendes has been busy in Barcelona in recent days, initially flying in to push through Joao Cancelo’s return to the club, but using the trip to also hold talks over Balde and midfielder Marc Casado.

Flick is said not to be keen on losing Balde. Yet the matchday decision tells its own story. Balde, Casado and Hector Fort — all players linked with moves away — were left out of the travelling party to Alicante. For a club under financial pressure and a player with serious Premier League interest, that combination will not go unnoticed at Old Trafford.

Spanish outlet Jijantes have gone further, reporting that Balde himself wants to leave in the final stretch of the window, with Mendes now working to secure him a new home.

Shaw succession plan driving United push

United’s hunt for a left-back has been simmering all summer. Luke Shaw, 31 last month and into the final year of his current deal, remains first choice, though the club can trigger a 12-month extension. The hierarchy, though, are clearly planning beyond him.

Lewis Hall was initially viewed as the ideal long-term solution, but United ran straight into a wall. Newcastle, already under scrutiny after high-profile departures including Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, have shown no appetite to cash in on another key asset. There has been talk of a late move for Hall, but with just over a week left in the window, that avenue looks close to blocked.

So the net has widened. RB Leipzig captain David Raum has been linked. So has Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas, who is also on Atletico Madrid’s radar. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown has been mentioned as another option.

Now, though, Balde’s situation feels different. A top-level, attacking full-back. On the fringes of the Barcelona squad at a time when United are actively pushing. And suddenly not on the plane to Elche.

Carrick’s needs laid bare

United’s transfer priorities were brutally underlined on the pitch. Michael Carrick’s side opened their Premier League campaign with a flat 2-0 defeat away to newly-promoted Hull, a performance that followed a 4-2 pre-season loss to an AC Milan team led by former United boss Ruben Amorim.

The midfield rebuild has already been addressed, at least on paper. United have landed Brighton’s Carlos Baleba as their third midfield signing of the summer, in a deal worth an initial £65m plus a possible £5m in add-ons. With that box ticked, the recruitment focus has swung decisively back to the left side of defence.

United know they cannot afford to miss again. Not after that start. Not with Shaw edging into the final phase of his contract. And not with a 22-year-old Spain international apparently edging towards the exit at Barcelona just as the clock starts to really tick on the summer window.
