Bajcetic on Brink of Emotional Celta Return as Liverpool Rebuilds

Liverpool’s changing of the guard is gathering pace – and for Stefan Bajcetic, the next step may mean a clean break.

The 21-year-old midfielder, once tipped as a long-term pillar of the Anfield rebuild, is now a strong candidate to leave the club permanently in the final days of the window, with a return to Celta Vigo on the table.

Bajcetic on brink of emotional Celta return

Liverpool plucked Bajcetic from Celta’s academy in December 2020, paying the LaLiga side £224,000 to bring the then 16-year-old to Merseyside. It looked a shrewd piece of business. Under Jurgen Klopp in 2022/23, he forced his way into the first-team picture, making 19 appearances and earning a new long-term contract as a statement of faith in his potential.

Then the momentum stalled.

A string of niggling injuries halted his progress and, instead of kicking on, Bajcetic was sent out to find rhythm and minutes elsewhere. Liverpool loaned him to Red Bull Salzburg and then Las Palmas during the 2024/25 season, but his Anfield career never quite restarted. He has not played a single game for Liverpool since May 2024.

Now comes the decisive moment.

According to Faro de Vigo, a well-regarded local outlet, Celta have moved to bring him back. Talks have taken place over a return to Galicia, six years after he first left the club for Liverpool. The report describes Bajcetic as “closer than ever to returning home” and says Celta “want him back”.

There is, though, a significant catch.

Celta’s move hinges on Liverpool agreeing to terminate the final year of his contract. Only then can the LaLiga side complete the deal on terms that work for them. Liverpool, aware there is little chance of banking a sizeable fee, are understood to be weighing up the idea of cutting him loose while protecting themselves with a future sell-on clause.

For a player once seen as a cornerstone of the next era, it would be a sobering but clean conclusion: no drawn-out saga, just a reset and a fresh start back where it all began.

Ramsay heads out again – and this one feels final

Bajcetic is not the only young player moving towards the exit. Calvin Ramsay has also left Anfield once more – and this time, the writing looks permanent, even if the deal is not.

New head coach Andoni Iraola is trimming the squad, stripping away those on the fringes, and Ramsay has been allowed to join St Mirren on a season-long loan.

Liverpool signed the right-back from Aberdeen in June 2022 for £4.2m, hoping he would push Trent Alexander-Arnold and offer reliable cover on the right. It never really happened. Ramsay managed just four first-team appearances for Liverpool and never convinced that he could hit the elite level required.

Loans followed. Preston, Bolton, Wigan, then Kilmarnock last season. Across all those spells, he totalled only 26 appearances, with his most productive stint coming at Wigan, where he played 12 times in the 2024/25 campaign.

Now 21 and entering the final year of his Liverpool contract, he heads to Paisley. St Mirren have taken him for the season without any option to buy written into the agreement. On paper, it is just another loan. In reality, it feels like the end of his Anfield journey.

If Ramsay impresses in the Scottish Premiership, the picture could change quickly – for him and for St Mirren. A strong year might yet turn this into something more permanent.

For Liverpool, though, the message is clear: a new era is being carved out, and some of yesterday’s projects are being quietly moved aside.
