Arsenal’s New Livewire: Christos Tzolis Brings Versatility and Speed
Arsenal have moved quickly to fill the Leandro Trossard-shaped gap in their attack, and they have not gone for a like-for-like name. They have gone for a livewire. Christos Tzolis arrives from Brugge as a left winger by trade, but one who can operate across the front line and thrives in the chaos of the final third.
The numbers from Belgium tell you why Arsenal pounced. Twenty-two goals. Twenty-nine assists. One season. Those are not the figures of a quiet wide man hugging the touchline; they are the output of a forward who lives in decisive areas and repeatedly delivers.
From Trossard’s Exit to Tzolis’ Opportunity
Trossard’s departure to Besiktas last week left a clear vacancy in Mikel Arteta’s attacking rotation. Arsenal wanted someone who could step in quickly, understand the demands of a high-pressing, high-possession side, and offer end product. Tzolis ticks each box.
He is expected to start primarily off the left, driving inside onto his stronger foot, but his versatility gives Arteta options. Across the front line, he can fill gaps, stretch defences, or attack space between the lines. In a squad built on fluidity and rotation, that matters.
A Head Start on the Rest
While much of the Arsenal dressing room is still shaking off the World Cup, Tzolis is already deep into his work. He joined his new team-mates at the Sobha Reality Training Centre this week, but he hasn’t arrived cold.
Greece’s absence from the World Cup changed his summer. Instead of a long tournament and a prolonged break, he had just under four weeks off. Even then, he didn’t fully switch off. Once Arsenal’s interest reached him, he used part of that time to train alone, keeping his fitness high and his sharpness close to match level.
Then came two weeks of pre-season with Brugge. Not token sessions, but proper preparation. He returned to training in early July and even banked 45 minutes in a friendly against Feyenoord. That outing ended with the kind of moment Arsenal will hope to see at the Emirates: cutting in from the left, opening his body, and curling a brilliant finish into the top corner. A farewell goal, and a statement of what he brings.
While many of his new team-mates are only just back in full training or are still on holiday after the World Cup, Tzolis has effectively stacked an extra mini pre-season on top of Arsenal’s. There was a short camp in Marbella for some of the squad last week, but it did not match the intensity of his work with Brugge earlier this month.
The result? At this stage of pre-season, there is every chance the new signing is one of the sharpest and fittest attackers in the building.
Girona in Sight
Arsenal’s first pre-season match comes next weekend against Girona in Spain. Tzolis is set to travel with the squad and is in line for his first appearance in an Arsenal shirt.
A new club, a new league, and a new role in one of Europe’s most scrutinised teams. He will not be eased in quietly. If his preparation is any guide, he will be ready to sprint.
