Amit Bhatia's First Appearance as Liverpool Vice-Chairman

Amit Bhatia will make his first appearance at Anfield as Liverpool’s new vice-chairman on Saturday, as the Reds open their home Premier League campaign against Nottingham Forest under Andoni Iraola.

The 46-year-old, who left QPR last month after an 18-year spell as co-owner and director, now fronts 1892 Holdings – the consortium that has acquired around 38 per cent of Liverpool from Fenway Sports Group (FSG) in a deal worth just over £2bn.

This is not a quiet, background investment. Based in London and long immersed in English football, Bhatia is expected to become a regular and highly visible presence at Anfield, far more so than many of his fellow investors.

Behind him stands heavyweight money. The 1892 Holdings group includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, both billionaires operating from opposite sides of the globe – Bezos in the United States, Saverin in Singapore. Their distance only underlines why Bhatia is set to become the public face of the new stake on Merseyside.

His influence will extend beyond the directors’ box. Bhatia is taking a seat on an expanded Liverpool board, joined by Elaine Saverin, wife of Eduardo Saverin, and Bryan Baum, who represents Bezos through K5 Sports, the venture capital firm Baum founded.

The structure is bold, but not yet final. The agreement still needs the green light from the new Independent Football Regulator, while all involved must clear the Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test before the deal is fully ratified.

On Saturday, those words meet reality. The new power structure will watch its first competitive minutes unfold under the Anfield lights, with Bhatia stepping into a role that could help shape Liverpool’s next era on and off the pitch.
