Alejandro Balde's Uncertain Future at Barcelona

Alejandro Balde’s Barcelona future is hanging by a thread after the left-back was left out of the squad for Sunday’s trip to Elche, capping a whirlwind 24 hours of doubt, tension and mixed messages around one of La Masia’s brightest products.

The omission comes on the heels of reports from Jijantes that the 22-year-old had decided to walk away from his boyhood club, a story that sent a jolt through the Barça fanbase on Saturday afternoon. The noise grew louder once it emerged that Balde’s agent, Jorge Mendes, had met with the club’s sporting director on Thursday, just before Hansi Flick publicly questioned the defender’s mindset.

Pressed about Balde in his prematch press conference, Flick didn’t hide behind clichés.

“It’s a difficult question because he has enormous quality and it’s important to know if a player is convinced to be able to compete in his position. That’s what I want to see from all my players,” the German said, drawing a clear line between talent and attitude.

He doubled down on the theme of standards and commitment.

“Every day I see what the players do – the level – and if they show me that they have the level to play. In the end, we have to play as a team, only then will we have success. I need everyone to be one hundred percent.”

Those words sounded, to many, like a warning. To Balde, according to Mundo Deportivo later that evening, they landed as a challenge. The outlet reported that the full-back had taken Flick’s comments as motivation and was prepared to stay and fight for his place.

But there was a caveat: if Barcelona no longer wanted him, he would accept the need to move on.

Less than a day later, his name was missing from the travelling list to Elche. In the unforgiving language of elite football, that kind of exclusion often says more than any press conference. For now, all signs point towards the exit door.

If Balde does go, there will be no shortage of takers. A La Masia graduate with first-team experience at one of the world’s biggest clubs and a former Spain international, he carries the profile Premier League clubs crave. At 22, he still has time to force his way back into Luis de la Fuente’s plans, and that long-term upside only strengthens his market.

Among the English suitors, Manchester United currently look the most advanced. Their need is obvious. A 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City in their league opener laid bare defensive frailties, and a modern, attacking left-back of Balde’s pedigree would immediately upgrade their options.

Back in Barcelona, Flick must now piece together a back line without the player who, not long ago, was seen as the club’s left-back for the next decade. With Balde cut from the Elche squad, Jordi Pesquer is expected to come into the side, as had been suggested earlier in the week.

New permanent signing Joao Cancelo is also in the squad list after completing his move from Al-Hilal, but his match fitness remains in doubt and he may have to settle for a role off the bench.

So a trip to Elche suddenly carries a different kind of subplot. On the pitch, Flick is trying to shape a team in his image. Off it, one of Barcelona’s most valuable homegrown assets looks closer than ever to testing himself elsewhere.

If Balde’s last contribution to Barça has already been made, the real question now is whether the club will regret letting a La Masia left-back in his early twenties walk away just as his prime years begin.
